Hi, welcome to my teaching page!
In addition to performing, teaching voice is a great passion of mine. For me, teaching and performing work together: when I teach and break down how to sing, I become a better performer. When I perform, I become a better teacher. I can’t imagine my life without either because they’ve been a part of my life for so long and are so deeply intertwined.
My approach to teaching comes from the classical tradition of singing, called bel canto. It’s a tradition of singing that came from singers who built careers singing in large halls over an orchestra, always without electronic amplification. I teach singers how to chase after their own resonance to achieve comfort, simplicity, and reliability in their singing.
I cater my teaching to the needs and desires of my students.
I have taught a wide, wide variety of singers: complete beginners to professional, bluegrass aficionados to aspiring opera singers. My lessons with each student vary considerably based on who the student is, but lessons typically start with vocal exercises and end with repertoire. We work hard in lessons, and as a result, they are a lot of fun. Additionally, I accompany students on the piano and travel within the wider Nashville area to students’ homes; I offer online lessons for those too far away.
I feel that it’s important to cultivate in students, even ones not trying to be professionals, what music really gets them excited to sing. My students have a listening assignment every week to sharpen their ear for both technique and expression, and that stays mostly within the musical theater and opera world.
But from there, I want to encourage students to use the technique and expression to do what they want with it.
I should add that I like to have at least one classical song in the works to stretch students, but ultimately, I like to have a front row seat to see how students use the skills I teach them for their own purposes.
I offer a free, thirty-minute lesson consultation - not an audition, but I like to see how we work together. Feel free to reach out through the contact form on the homepage if you like; and let’s get something on the calendar!
