Der Rosenkavalier - Final Trio
Der Rosenkavalier (“dare ROZE-in-kah-vah-leer”) is one of Richard Strauss’ (REE-khard Str-ow!-ss) most beloved operas. If you want to know more about the plot, The Royal Opera House (ROH) already has a lovely explanation of the final trio HERE
The opera depicts an idealized version of Vienna. I find this opera completely transporting: the music is sublime and makes you wish you were born in Vienna— or at least the Vienna portrayed here!
Some quick opera fluency tips:
There are two Strausses- Richard and Johann (YO-hahn).
Johann Strauss is most famous for his waltzes (he was known as “The Waltz King”!), but Richard Strauss was most famous for his operas, as well as a variety of orchestral works. Rosenkavalier features waltzes heavily, which very much confuses the issue!
People tend to know this opera by the German name, not the English. I’ve heard it called “Rosenkav” too.
I can’t help it: I just have to throw this video of Rosenkavalier waltzes in too - not singing, but from the same opera. So gorgeous!!
